About

Steamboat Dance Theatre

Our mission is “to engage, educate, and enrich the communities of the Yampa Valley through dance and movement.”

OUR VISION

A vibrant culture of dance in the Yampa Valley, where anyone who wants to dance is able to.

Did you know? Steamboat Dance Theatre is a 501c3 non-profit that has been a network, pillar, and resource for studios, instructors, and dance enthusiasts in the Yampa Valley for over 50 years! SDT aims to make dance affordable and accessible to anyone in the community who wants to experience dance. By working with local studios and community organizations, we are able to keep dance alive and thriving in our small town, and increase quality of life for its residents.

Annual Concert

The Annual Community Dance Concert invites community members to produce, choreograph, and perform in a dance concert. The concert features dancers of all skill sets and a wide variety of dance styles. The Concert is a well-attended community event.

Dance Scholarships

The Scholarship Program is designed to support the needs of dance students that demonstrate financial need, to allow them to take dance classes. This program offers three different types of scholarships: 1st Position Scholarships (individuals needing support for regular weekly classes), 5th Position Scholarships (individuals needing support for tuition or registration fees for regional competitions, conventions, workshops, etc.) and Sponsor-A-Dancer (individual students nominated by their studio based on leadership, commitment, and financial need).

Community Enrichment

The Community Enrichment Program encompasses everything from master dance classes to affordable community dance classes to bringing dance programming into local non-profits that provide services to youth, the elderly and special needs groups to School Outreach (bringing dance instruction into the local schools) to Dance on Film (free dance documentary showings). These programs are designed to increase an appreciation of dance for dancers and dance enthusiasts alike.

History of

Steamboat Dance Theatre

Steamboat Dance Theatre (SDT) was founded in 1972 by a small group of local dancers who wanted to host a community dance performance. In the early years, SDT had 12 members and was couched under the umbrella of the Steamboat Arts Council. Over the past 50+ years, the organization has grown significantly in both programs and membership and has become its own fully operational 501(c)3 organization. In addition to hosting a local community dance performance, SDT now offers a wide array of dance programs that aim to enrich, enhance and educate the community. SDT now has an average membership base of 150 people, a healthy financial profile, an active and involved Board, a part-time Executive Director, and a strong reputation in the community.
